Matute Birding Nature Reserve: From Cattle Ranch to Conservation Sanctuary
Approximately 45 years ago, I inherited a small piece of land that had been used for cattle ranching for generations. However, from the moment I walked through it, I knew its true purpose was not in production but in the conservation of the tropical dry forest.
This ecosystem, one of the most threatened in Colombia, had been severely impacted by livestock activities. Many tree species were in decline, and some had even disappeared. Determined to restore the land, I initiated a reforestation process, planting key species to revive the natural balance and rebuild habitats for native wildlife.
As the trees grew and the forest began to regenerate, wildlife returned. Birds, mammals, reptiles, and insects that had once vanished from the area found refuge in the reserve. To ensure the sustainability of this project, we opened our doors to the scientific community and ecotourism.
A Sanctuary for Science and Ecotourism
Over time, Matute Birding Nature Reserve became a hub for biologists, researchers, and students interested in studying the biodiversity of the tropical dry forest. We began hosting scientific expeditions, thesis projects, and birdwatchers, drawn by the area’s incredible natural wealth.
Today, the reserve is home to over 250 bird species, as well as a wide variety of mammals, reptiles, insects, and plants. Its water sources, streams, and springs have been revitalized, making it one of the top nature destinations near Cartagena.
At Matute Birding Nature Reserve, every visitor not only experiences the beauty of the tropical dry forest but also becomes part of our mission to protect, preserve, and restore this unique ecosystem.
